Black and tan is produced by the at allele at the agouti locus paired with a dominant black-pigment base. Two black and tan parents can produce chocolate and tan or red puppies if both carry those recessives, which is why we publish the full colour genotype of every parent in our program.
Look for tan points that are clean and well defined rather than smudged, and a coat with no white beyond a small chest locket. Black and tan puppies frequently darken over their first six months.
